Yowa Yowa Camera Woman Diary
Natsumi Hayashi is a Tokyo-based photographer who goes by the name of yowayowa (weakling) camera woman, poking fun at herself that she can barely carry her own camera. She beh=gan publicly documenting her work in 2009. In 2010 her photo diary morphed into a showcase of series titled "Today's Levitation" where, mixed with photos of her cat, she would post photos of herself frozen in mid air. Some of the photos are so still, it's hard to imagine how someone exerting such a great upwards force, can capture a moment frozen in time.
Add a few sentences about Yowa Yowa and her work. Include your opinions on her work and why. Describe one of her photos in depth.
I find this image very interesting because although there is still the blur of her feet, this picture is far more frozen than any other. The train moving in the opposite direction to her really adds to movement but also freezes the image; her body facing one direction and the train facing the other. The moment in time captured is the point at which they move past each other.
Levitation Photography
Levitation
Using inspiration from Natsumi Hayashi we tried to create the illusion of levitation by jumping and capturing it at a fast shutter speed while trying to seem as if we are not jumping, but actually levitating.
Using inspiration from Natsumi Hayashi we tried to create the illusion of levitation by jumping and capturing it at a fast shutter speed while trying to seem as if we are not jumping, but actually levitating.
In these photos inspiration was taken from the Yowa Yowa Camera Woman Diary where she successfully managed to give the impression of levitation.
This photo is the best example of Yowayowa's work as the subject's hands and feet are flat, almost giving the impression of levitation. This image could be improved, however, by tying up the hair to give no impression of movement. Other than that I believe this was the best attempt.
There is one of Angelina with an umbrella that is your strongest image. Select which one it is and then explain why this one's the strongest of the shoot. What could you do differently the next time to improve your work?
Zoom Blur
mThe technique of photography used in these photos is called zoom blur. It creates blur with the symmetry of the image and captures all the movement the shutter records. The use of a tripod is critical because with the shutter speed of 1/4 it is impossible to take these without normal blur. When creating this effect you will need to set your camera on a tripod and slow you shutter speed to less than a second. When the shutter is open the photographer will need to change the focal length of the camera. This will create zoom blur. This technique was created by Dominic Harris.
WWW: The effect was created with the right amount of exposure.
EBI: The subject was positioned right in the centre of the photograph to further enhance the symmetry. A reshoot of the projects would be useful and shoot in a lighter background and foreground
You don't actually need to have symmetry whilst creating zoom blur photography. If you look at Dominic Harris' photo below, the focus stretches to the far right background. What else could have improved? Do you need to shoot this project again? If so, what would you do differently?

This is an example of Dominic Harris's work.
This is quite an exciting piece of work as he has taken it in the daytime, using a slightly longer shutter speed and has managed to make the lines crisp and the colours vibrant.
Explain what you like about this work specifically and why.

Francesca Woodman
Francesca Stern Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographer best known for her black and white pictures featuring either herself or female models. Many of her photographs show women, naked or clothed, blurred (due to movement and long exposure times), merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured. Francesca Woodman intended to create ghostly imagery by using long shutter speeds to create blurred movement and make the viewer consider the absence of presence and distortion. Woodman considers disturbing psychological states in her series 'Space' through her moving in a chaotic way. woodman wanted to explore people's inner forces.

Experimenting With the Technique
Introduce the task- what were the intentions and how does it link to the theme?
This shoot was meant to try and recreate the ghost like effects that Francesca Woodman has achieved through her images of distortion. This is to capture part of the body in focus, and the other part as a blur, creating distortion.
In these photos the subject has one part of their body that is blurred and the rest of their body which is in focus.
However Francesca Woodman's photos were more abstract where the viewer could not make out the person's face.
Please show the images in colour first, then show what you edited in Photoshop by including print screens and then the final b+w image. Analyse your results. How similar is it to Francesca Woodman's? If not, how could you emulate them more?

Romain Laurent is a twenty seven year old Photographer based in Los Angeles who was born in The French Alps. He is well known for his tilt series and has been working as a professional photographer since 2006. His work captures the world from a different perspective while retaining a realistic background and uses his assistant to hold the subjects in position and the erases them in post production. It will help me to try differently with creative angles.
Good start to your contextual work. Be more specific as to how you will emulate/be inspired to try different things. Explain his GIFs and how he produces them.

Light Painting
Michael Bossanko
Michael Bossanko creates 'Light Art', or 'Light Painting', a technique involving long exposures. He does this by setting up his tripod at night and by using a very long exposure he is able to essentially draw with torches and light sources. He wants us to consider the work connecting to the environment. Bossanko is considering reason and purpose in these photos. This is shown by the Yin and Yang. Michael Bossanko wanted to make a comment on a planned project. He has used many torches and light sources in his work to 'paint'. This creates a trail effect which helps to support his point about his work being continuous and connecting to the environment.
